A Brief History Of The College

SARBATI DEVI WOMEN’S COLLEGE was established in the year 1981 in this small but cosmopolitan town of RAJGANGPUR with the patronage of renowned philanthropist late Sri. Panalal Agrawal with a view to providing education to local girls in the name of his wife Sarbati Devi. But, now the College has grown into an important centre of learning for women catering to the needs of all categories of students of Sundargarh District as well as other parts of the state.

The College was inaugurated by Sj. GangadharMohapatra, the then Minister, Education and Youth services, Govt. of Odisha on 18.10.1981 with Sj. Kishore Chandra Patel, the then Minister of State, Industries as guest of honour. Sj. HarmohanPattnaik, I.A.S., Collector and District Magistrate, Sundargarh was the first President and Sj. NandkishoreAgrawal, Industrialist, was the first General Secretary of the Managing Committee.

At its inception, the College had only a strength of 34 students. But, since then there has been a rapid but steady improvement with the opening of Degree Classes in 1984. Hons.in Economics, Pol. Science and Education was introduced in the session 1992 – 93. Science at the Higher Secondary level was inaugurated in the session 1995 – 96.

Hons.teaching in Odia started from the academic session 2016 – 17 and in History & Home Science from the session 2017-18. With this, all the pass subjects in Degree classes were converted into Hons. B.Sc. with 64 seats (all Hons) with Hons in Physics (16), Chemistry (16), Botany (16), Mathematics (08) and Zoology (08) was introduced in the College from the session 2017-18. Commerce stream also started imparting teaching from the session 2017-18 with 64 seats in the Higher Secondary classes. Some new proposals have been sent to the Dept. of Higher Education, Govt. of Odisha for increase of seats and opening of Degree classes in Commerce.

The present strength of the College has gone up to 1280. The College provides Hostel facilities for around 300 students in two big Hostels, one by TRW Dept., Govt. of India and the other by UGC during 11th Plan period. Being located in an area predominantly inhabited by tribal and backward classes, the College provides a unique opportunity to them for higher education.

The College celebrated its Silver Jubilee and it was befitting on the occasion that the celebration was inaugurated on 18.02.2006 by Smt. SujataKarthikeyan I.A. S., Collector and District Magistrate, Sundargarh. The College celebrated the closing ceremony on 18.10.2006, exactly twenty five years after its inception during the period of Prof. (Mrs.) GiribalaMohanta, the then Principal of this College.
